Essence of CISA

First Contact with CISA

After a person makes their first inquiry through our contact form (see below) on the CISA website, they can expect to receive a welcome email with a link to view our Price List. If a phone number is provided, that person will receive a phone call from a Representative in Costa Rica to discuss any questions they may have.

After discussing details of their stay; number of weeks, desired immersion Experience, our CISA Program Coordinator will put together a budget for them to review. Once they have made the final decision to attend CISA, they will fill in our Online Application Form, found in the Contact Us page of the website.

We will then email a Profile of the Host Family that they will be staying with, that includes a picture and description.

Plus they will receive a Student Prep Package to help them prepare for the trip.

Payment for the budget is to be sent to our California office. The student will send a check for 40% of the budget as a deposit one month before arrival, and the remaining amount just before arrival.

The next step is to wait for the day that one flies to Costa Rica!

Orientation at CISA

You will come to CISA by foot or bus (depending on where your homestay family is located). Your host family will guide you to where the school is located.

Orientation at CISA

You will join in with the other CISA students at 9:00 AM for a short devotional, prayer and song. When that is done, you can enjoy the complimentary coffee that is available to students daily.

Your Orientation will then begin. You will receive a folder with some details that describes more about the culture of Tuis, homestay guidelines, CISA guidelines, Student Code of Conduct, Waivers, volunteer opportunities and information about Tours.

It is a time to discuss questions or concerns you have about your stay.

The next part involves you doing a written Spanish Assessment in order for the CISA Director to evaluate your level of Spanish.

After the Assessment is completed you will take a Turrialba City Tour. You will either go before lunch or after lunch. At times, the Turrialba City Tour is postponed for another day depending on the scheduling of tours and other activities.

Helpful hint: Bring a pen in order to be ready to write the Spanish Assessment.

First day of classes

Depending on the results of your Spanish Assessment, you will be placed in a class that is appropriate for your level.

First day of classes

You are given a CISA Spanish Workbook as well.

Class sizes are from 1-4 students.

The classes are from Monday to Friday – 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Students who have registered for the ALL-INCLUSIVE INTENSIVE Experience, would also have some extra classes in the afternoons from between 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Students will receive a schedule.

We typically use the first few days of classes as an evaluation period, if it appears that you are at a higher or lower level of Spanish that your Assessment reflected, then we would move you to another class that is best suited for you.

Helpful hint: Bring your own workbook to write extra notes in class.

Teachers

All of our CISA teachers have been trained in teaching Spanish as a second language.

CISA teachers

They are Costa Ricans who live in Tuis or in Turrialba or in the Escazu area. The teachers are Christians and uphold Christian values.

CISA has teachers that work with children, teens and adults.

Helpful hint: Do not hesitate to tell your teacher your learning style: visual, oral, written, tactile. This information helps them be able to teach you more effectively.

Voz que Clama Mission

CISA is able to organize group trips that want to come and combine Spanish classes and community service through the VQC Mission. Work projects, ESL, VBS, kids activities, arts, etc. are examples of possible activities.

Students and families studying at CISA are able to volunteer with the VQC Mission. Guidance is provided and projects created depending on the areas of interest of the students.

The VQC Mission is a not-for-profit mission that began in 2003 in Tuis. It was founded by two Costa Ricans from San Jose. It also has the nonprofit status of 501(c)3 in the United States. Donors are able to receive a tax receipt for financial contributions mailed to our US office.

Juan Santamaria Intl. Airport

Students can expect to arrive at a moderately sized airport with a small customs area and small luggage pick up area.

After getting your passport stamped in customs, you go down some escalators to get your luggage. After you have your bags, you walk no more than a few meters towards a large wall of windows and two sets of exit doors.

Through the windows you will see many people waiting for family, friends, as well as Tour companies holding signs with names on it.

We have our CISA driver holding a sign as well that says ‘CISA’, as well as your name.

Just look for the sign through the window and the driver will then help you bring your luggage to the van.

You will receive a Welcome Letter from the driver that explains details and your schedule.

Helpful Tip: The carts provided in the airport for your luggage are not allowed outside unless you give money to the luggage helpers that are waiting inside. Suggested tip: $3-$5

First day at Homestay in Tuis

After arriving to your homestay from the airport, you will be given a chance to settle in, unpack, get to know your family and rest.

All of our homestays are carefully screened and have been approved to host students. They are Christian families who can be trusted. They enjoy hosting students and getting to know each person that stays at their house.

You will be given a fantastic opportunity to practice speaking Spanish, as none of our homestay families speak English. It is a real immersion experience!

Before arriving to Costa Rica, you will have been given a profile of the homestay family that includes a picture. So you will already have a sense of who they are, their names, ages, etc.

Depending on your day of arrival (on a weekend or weekday), you will have your Orientation at CISA the next day or a couple days later.

Helpful hint: Bringing your own family photos helps your homestay family get to know you more and learn about where you are from.

Turrialba City Tour

You will take the Public Bus with our CISA guide in order for you to experience and be familiar with the public transportation system of this area.

Turrialba City tour

The bus will leave Tuis from the main bus stop and then you will head towards the main bus terminal in Turrialba.

On the way, you will see the town ‘La Suiza’ which is close to Tuis that has a pharmacy, Internet café etc.

From the main terminal in Turrialba, you will walk around the city to become familiar with key places and landmarks: central park, banks, coffee shop, and Internet café.

It will also be an opportunity for you to exchange some of your US dollars to Colones. You will need to bring your passport if you are going to use the teller. If not, your interac card should work at the ATM machine. It is preferred that you take money out of the ATM machine, as the line-ups at the banks in Costa Rica are very long.

After the tour, you will go back to the bus and head back to your homestay.

Helpful hint: Bring your passport to CISA, so that you don’t have to go back to your homestay to pick up it before the tour.

Extra Classes

Included in the Immersion Experiences are the extra classes such as, Bible terminology class and Cooking Class. These extra classes compliment the more formal class time that occurs with the student's main teacher.

Cooking class at CISA

Cooking class – 1 hour

This student favorite takes place one day a week in the CISA Kitchen. Students are taught how to prepare local Costa Rican dishes. They take a hands on approach – cutting the vegetables, prepping the food and learning new vocabulary, etc., and then get the bonus of sampling the food at the end of the class!

Helpful hint: Come with an empty stomach so that you have room to eat the delicious food!

Bible class – 1 hour

This class is very useful for learning Biblical terminology in Spanish. Students work through bible verses, have discussions and also practice their listening and speaking skills.

Curriculum

The Directors designed CISA's curriculum. It has been divided into levels. Students receive a book that corresponds to their level and class.

As the student works through the book and depending on length of stay, they will move on to the next level and book.

The teachers use the books as a guideline and also have extra handouts, homework, and teaching tools that they use in the class.

For those that want to learn specific vocabulary for example; doctor's, teachers, businessperson, Pastor's, missionaries, we can cater the class to your learning needs.

Medical students and professionals may request to work from our Medical curriculum in conjunction with the regular workbooks.

Helpful Hint: Students who study/review their notes after class tend to remember more vocabulary.

Features

Students have the option of adding other features to the Immersion Experiences to expand and reinforce their language learning and experience.

Fitness Classes

Students can choose to do basic Fitness classes at CISA in a group setting. They are low impact classes to motivate physical activity that can include aerobics, walking, etc.

Medical Curriculum

CISA has a medical terminology curriculum that can be taught to Medical professionals and students, which is integrated within the chosen Immersion Experience.

Family

Parents with children are able to enjoy an experience together learning Spanish and living in another culture, all with family rates.

CISA facilitates tours via the Rainforest Experience, which arranges special Tours for students.

Interaction with the locals of Tuis

The unique aspect of CISA is the constant interaction that one can experience with the locals of Tuis.

Interaction with local of Tuis, Turrialba

With the town being only around 3,000 people, it is a very close knit and friendly community. Students can feel safe and secure walking the streets.

It is not uncommon for students to be invited over to a house of a relative or neighbor or friend of their homestay. Even if the student doesn’t speak a lot of Spanish or even know the family, we encourage students to go on these visits, as it allows them to know more about the community and Costa Rican culture.

And of course, one can practice speaking more Spanish! As the town is not a tourist place, the locals do not speak English. So the immersion experience is very authentic!

Drive back to the airport

Depending on the time of the student’s flight, the CISA van will bring you to the airport so that you are at the airport at least 2 hours early.

In some cases there are other students who are leaving the same day, so it may be that you will have to go earlier than your own flight in order to accommodate for the other students.

Once you have checked in your luggage and gone through the security check, you can enjoy the shopping experience in the airport, with great souvenirs to choose from. They also give away free Britt coffee samples and chocolates!

Helpful hint: Have your $26.00 US airport tax ready to pay when you enter the airport. You make a right and line up to pay the tax. Once given the receipt you need to fill in the information on the back. Then you can find the check in line of your airline. The airport is small, so you can’t get lost.
